Extended Story

Born the only child to Aubrey and Lewiz Caddigan, an accountant and industrial worker respectively, Bernie Caddigan’s life began to take a downward spiral when his father was killed in a costly steel mill accident, and had to take up an assortment of odd jobs at age 14 to support himself and his mother. He made it a point to try and not resort to taking up criminal activity to make ends meet, but as the economy progressively got harder on him and Aubrey, who got fired some time later, he had no choice but to, as he was getting desperate for money to pay their debts. Becoming a high school dropout by 17, Bernie would then apply for a job at a shoe store, used as a front for the most infamous mafia family in Galdakian record, the Copperjaws. He would spend 6 years of his life as one of their best hitters, before killing them all in a blazing one-man coup d’état out of realization of what he was doing, and his anger over their exploitation of everyday people like himself.

Having lost his right eye from his attack, Bernie fitted that socket with a glass eye, to remind him of the price vigilantism can have, and spent the next 26 years afterward getting his life in order and attempting to live off the grid. He would later meet Jimmy Scritches and Lee Toriwing, other convicts he becomes close friends with and houses, hoping he can keep them off the path of self-destruction he himself almost took. This would be put to the test when the three are enlisted by the government to assassinate other criminals of their ilk, in an operation that would reveal itself as a means to sacrifice the entire planet to the malevolent ancient god, Kahariet, who battled and lost to another deity, Nazirin, eons ago for control of the then newly formed Galdakilus.

Stopping the resurrection and surviving the fight against the Eyes of two, but not without psychological trauma, Bernie and his friends have attempted to return to some semblance of a “normal” life since, but this is suddenly interrupted when he, Jimmy, and Lee are caught in the suction of a space-time tear known as a RED DISC, and get trapped in a world not unlike their own, in the midst of a martial arts tournament known as the Battle Craze Tournament Series. Lost and unnerved by the familiarity of these unknown surroundings, but prepared for anything, Bernie and co. enter Battle Craze uninvited, looking to find another RED DISC that can take them back home.

“God.. damn it. Well, here we go again.”

Unique Trait
Streetwise Bernie has an extended number of OTG options against downed opponents, primarily throws. Bernie also prevents the opponent from recovering after knockdowns if he starts a combo from a counter hit.
Input Move Name Description Dire Counter
Craze Technique
SP+SK Ramblin' Inventory Bernie rummages through his jacket for a weapon to hit the opponent with. Hold down the button after input and release at certain intervals to get a different item. Each item has varying startup and recovery times. Press down to cancel the move at any time during the “rummaging” animation. Cancelling the move on a particular item will store it, so you can either use the stored item the next time this special’s used, or hold the button again to keep cycling further, and so on.
RI Lvl.1 Slugger of '63 Baseball Bat Bernie makes a quick swing of the bat. Quickest startup of his “melee” items, and the only item in RI aside from the brick that’s safe on block. Battery
RI Lvl.2 Lead Pipe The same idea as the Slugger, but hits harder at the cost of slightly longer startup and recovery. Spinout
RI Lvl.3 Folding Chair Bernie takes the chair by the legs and attempts to bash it over the opponent’s head. Overhead. Stagger
RI Lvl.4 Brick A simple projectile, culled from the Brickermen. The brick travels 3/4 of screen length when thrown from fullscreen.
RI Lvl.5 Whester's Kavity Katana A sword forged from the most potent peppermint, an exclusive from Whunger DeWhlights Chocolate Factory. Bernie does a horizontal slash with it, which reaches about half-screen. Can also destroy projectiles. Freeze
RI Lvl.6 Hand of King Dead King Dead’s comically big right hand, still attached to the arm. Don’t ask how Bernie has this. The arm gets pulled out, and the hand will proceed to charge a finger snap, which releases a small electric shockwave. Causes wallbounce on hit. Wallbounce
Throws
LP+LK Too Close for Comfort Bernie gut punches the opponent, then gently nudges them away.
b.LP+LK The Door’s That Way Bernie drags the opponent backwards by the head and tosses them.
j.LP+LK You Won’t Need Those Ribs Bernie chucks the opponent to the ground and then body splashes on top of them.
2LP+LK (On downed opponent) Need a Lift? Bernie picks the opponent off the ground and lifts them over his head. Bernie can do a number of follow-ups after this, but must act quickly as the opponent will eventually break free, staggering Bernie.
6 (after Need a Lift?) Nanner’s Cracker Bernie does a Pendulum Backbreaker on the opponent, then tosses them a good distance away from him.
2 (after Need a Lift?) Mail Call Bernie drops the opponent on their back, then kicks them back up, causing flipout.
4 (after Need a Lift?) Assembling Average Bernie spins himself around a couple of times with the opponent in tow, then tosses them in the other direction at an arc.
8 (after Need a Lift?) Blast Off, Dumbass Bernie leaps into the air and piledrives the opponent. The damage ender of these followups. Bernie can also reverse this throw by holding diagonal upwards in the opposite direction.
Command Normals

214SP Crashing Down An anti-air grab. If it connects, Bernie will slam the opponent down in front of him. Groundbounce
63214LP Flip It My Way Command grab where Bernie will simply switch sides with the opponent, giving him a bit of advantage afterwards.
236K Gimmie a Hand, Jimmy! Bernie calls out Jimmy, aiding with a sequence of three slashes with his knife. Has decent startup, but Jimmy can be interrupted and will retreat if he takes a hit. Has a cooldown after usage regardless of whether Jimmy completes his sequence or is interrupted. Best used as a combo linker/extender. LK version summons Jimmy closer to Bernie, while SK has Jimmy advance forwards for more range. Stagger
214K Gimmie a Hand, Lee! Lee drops in from behind and fires a single shot at the opponent with her revolver. A zone-ing tool without a Ramblin' Inventory item and cover to close in against an opponent. Follows the same cooldown rules as Jimmy. LK version shoots right after Lee enters, while SK shot is delayed. Crumple
All-Out Attacks

All-Out Destruction

The super ends with Jimmy dropping from the air and slashing the opponent with the Spectral Blade of Osmekus.

Concept

Bernie is one of Ayasme’s oldest OCs, with a varied amount of different design ideas over the years, as well as design traits culled later from characters in other project concepts of theirs that never took off. When his first design was made in 2015, originally named Burpo Custon, he was meant to be a golem, but upon revisiting the character in early 2020, this was revised to have him just be a weird humanoid. The new name and glass eye elements were decided years earlier.

Likewise, Jimmy is about as old as Bernie is in conception, with much more ideas in mind as to what he was before a design was put to paper, including an Octopus. He originally had much bigger eyes, 5 fingers, and his head stalks used to be hair akin to Pesci’s in JoJo’s part 5. He and Bernie were designed first for a potential RPG project, before that went on the then indefinite backburner in pursuit of a fighting game project instead.

Not originally part of the universe made in mind for the Bernie and Jimmy project, first named Project AESOP, Lee was created in 2020 to be the third playable character alongside the former two, when the RPG idea was finally revisited and reworked to instead be a single-player boss rush fighting game, now known as VenDeadA. Lee’s gun proficiency stems from the idea from the offset to make her a zoner, when Bernie and Jimmy became grappler and rushdown types respectively, in line with the new game plan.

Trivia

  • Bernie’s birthplace, Azaesrik, is a very, very loose mutation of the name of Arizona. If he was a real Earth person, that’s where he’d be born in, more than likely.
  • Bernie is also the only playable character in Battle Craze who uses a firearm of any kind.
  • Jimmy’s last name, Scritches, came from a friend’s humorous description of how they’d pet their cat several years ago in a Skype call, some time before Discord launched. Unlike Burpo Custon before Bernie, the full Jimmy Scritches name has stuck with the character from first design to the present day.
  • Lee’s birthdate, April 3rd, shares the same date with American actors Marlon Brando and Eddie Murphy. Her first and last name is also a play on words of the southern brown tree frog (her species)’s binomial name, Litoria ewingii, and her two middle names are the last names of the French naturalists that coined that frog’s taxonomy, André Duméril and Gabriel Bibron.
  • Bernie, given the fact that he's technically three characters, and each has their own line of dialogue against the rest of the cast, has the most dialogue and winquotes out of the entire Battle Craze Cast.
